Parkland/Greater Edmonton Project

Need more Ice or Need more pool space??

In a 2017 the Tri-Municipal Regional Council of the Parkland County area conducted a consumer study and identified, “Participants felt that because the Trans Alta Tri‐Leisure Centre is located in Spruce Grove, the best location for a new multi‐plex facility would be in Stony Plain or nearby in Parkland County in order to serve more users.”

Parkland County conducted a survey of interest in 2017 with residence, which can be located in their published article, “Parkland County Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan” which stated that residence were least satisfied with current recreational and leisure facilities. The plan also surveyed the top ten activities residence were currently participating in. Swimming/Recreation/Fitness Swim was polled at 61% participation and number one choice of sport. Swimming was also noted as the number one recreation of those not participating that would like to. While the goal of Parkland County and Stony Plain is to add more smaller accessible pools, it limits the use and community engagement in promoting local businesses.

Building a facility with (2) 50m competitive pools will accomplish the Stony Plain and Parkland County regional goals of adding facilities for public swim use to the community and increase the space available for user groups and events. The facility is meant to build economic growth for the area in bringing tourists from around the world. The facility will support user groups and local business’ in providing proper competition facilities, business space, promotional opportunities and tourism. The facility will also bring additional recreational benefits to the community in having a ice rink, training pool, therapy pool, family swim centre, workout centre, training rooms and arena making it an all-encompassing family oriented training, leisure and competitive facility.

Facility development within the Stony Plain city limits is being considered, however, other communities outside Edmonton and Calgary are in the same situation and need. This project will encompass 30-35 acres of land. Be membership based, user group friendly.  Layout of pools will be designed to host international swim competitions and support family activities. The facility is designed to hire local workers increasing the workforce of the chosen city to approximately 200 employees.
